Holding his first campaign rallies since his criminal trial in Manhattan began, former President Donald J. Merchan sanctioned Trump for violating his gag order for nine posts and reposts on his Truth Social site and campaign website, targeting witnesses and jurors in his Manhattan prosecution. In his written order, summarized from the bench at the start of the trial on Tuesday, the judge also warned Trump that if he persists in violating the gag order, he faces jail time. Perhaps the new sanctions — or those likely to come in response to the newest four allegations of gag order violations — will be the end of it. As I have previously explained, Trump’s argument that the gag order infringes his First Amendment rights is specious. In any event, even if Trump believes those things, that is no excuse under New York law to violate a court order.

University leaders responded positively, helping to build more dynamic and well-endowed centers for this work than on any other peer campus in the country. Many students, staff and faculty, especially those from minority backgrounds, feel that they have suffered setback after setback at the hands of hostile politicians and deferential administrators. Public and private university leaders have become more distant from their own campuses as they focus on fund-raising and testifying before hostile federal and state legislatures. There are, of course, good reasons why university leaders should not give in to protesters on these and other points.

To the Editor:Re “Split Court Hints at Some Immunity for Ex-Presidents” (front page, April 26):Incredibly, though perhaps not surprisingly, it is patently clear that the conservative justices on the Supreme Court, based on their questions and statements made during argument, are breaking ground for the demise of our democracy. These justices have left no doubt that they disagree with the holding of the lower courts and will find that Donald Trump enjoys at least some degree of immunity from criminal prosecution for acts while he was president. Further, it is apparent that they will send the case back to the trial court with instructions to make findings about whether the charges brought by the special counsel, Jack Smith, against Mr. Trump involved official or private acts. This will ensure that a trial of the case cannot be held before the November election. What is surprising is the painfully inadequate response of the liberal justices and the missed opportunities for the special counsel to present his case about efforts to overturn the 2020 election with greater cogency and passion.

Trump himself has continued to lobby for absolute immunity, including before his appearance at a New York court where he’s on trial for business fraud. The Supreme Court’s conservative majority appeared ready today to rule that former presidents should have some degree of immunity from criminal prosecution. Such a decision, while effectively rejecting Donald Trump’s assertion of absolute immunity, could narrow the scope of the federal criminal case accusing Trump of plotting to subvert the 2020 election. They agreed with the liberal justices mainly about the significance of their decision, which is expected in late June or early July: “We’re writing a rule for the ages,” Justice Neil Gorsuch said. Many of the justices seemed to be considering the idea that presidents should enjoy some form of protection against criminal prosecution. But the liberal justices voiced concern that by offering presidents a shield from prosecution, the court could turn the Oval Office into a “seat of criminality,” as Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson described it.
